The Wes Campbell legal snafu
I’ve finally had time to look at the Wes Campbell lawsuit. I’m not going to call it the Newsboys lawsuit because at this time it’s very unclear if any of the members of the band even know this is going on. It’s not like the band hasn’t had a huge revolving door of members and they’ve been radio silent since the article by Julie Roys was published at the Roys Report. You’d think if the allegations were false the band would have come out, made a statement and taken Roys to court. Again, crickets.
I am not a lawyer, but it looks like from here what Wes Campbell is claiming is more tortuous interference and conspiracy by others to destroy his business. Oh lawdy, we know folks in this lifestyle love their conspiracies. But, here’s the thing. With tortuous interference it’s imperative that Campbell have very detailed records that show the financial losses created by the false information of others. Same for the supposed conspiracy. It means that discovery is going to be wild in this case, Campbell may not realize that he’s opened a Pandora’s Box that could potentially impact his financial bottom line in worse ways once everything is laid bare.
It’s my belief this will backfire spectacularly. If there’s one thing I know about this particular sub culture is that money, not Jesus, is the real king. Wes is upset that the exposure of Tait as a possible predator that he may have covered for has crash landed his financial bottom line. Since this is a culture where people refuse to take personal responsibility for anything Wes is reacting in the most typical way. That people sue each other over the slightest dumb things, allegations of defamation tossed about before the whole mess gets tossed out of the courts. It’s just another type of Evangelical bullying writ large. I predict this will go nowhere.
